Song of the day- Faithfully by Journey (I've been listening to it non-stop as I finish up my WIP.)
If you hadn't already guessed, I love books. Whoa! Big surprise there, right! I'm a huge romance fan. Huge! The stories I read have to have a HEA (Happily ever after.)
The bulk of the books I read tend to be adult, paranormal romance, with a few contemporaries thrown in here and there for good measure. Once in a while, though, I come across a YA that just sucks me in and I'm helpless to do anything but read. This was the case with Susan Kaye Quinn's Life, Liberty and Pursuit.
Here's the back cover blurb:
When college-bound Eliza falls into a cruise-ship pool, she doesn’t expect to fall in love. And when navy recruit David pulls her from the water, he finds her surprisingly hard to resist. But a whirlwind of rescues, candlelit nights, and beachside misunderstandings pulls them into a four-day love affair that threatens to break their hearts before their love has a chance to start.
When David leaves for endless drills and physical training in boot camp, and Eliza returns to Albuquerque to prepare for Princeton in the fall, they dare to keep loving each other and struggle to imagine a future when they can be together. But when miles and mistrust pull them apart, they are forced to choose between keeping true to their dreams and having the courage to love.
My review:
This story had me from the first page. I'm a sucker for a good romance, and that's exactly what Life, Liberty and Pursuit delivers, a good romance.
Eliza, the female lead, is sweet, smart and independent, which I liked. Though sometimes shy and nervous, she's not afraid to take risks and make hard decisions. Eliza enjoys a whirlwind romance with our hero, David, while on a four day cruise with her newly married parents. Having just graduated, Eliza is set to go to Princeton in the fall––thousands of miles away from her new love, David.
Ahhh, David. So handsome, so attentive and sweet. He's the perfect mix of sexy, strong and gentle, and a match for Eliza in every way. Determined to step out from the shadow of his Doctor father and charismatic brother, David has enlisted in the Navy, and is heading for bootcamp shortly after meeting Eliza on the cruise. Determined to make their short time together as memorable as possible, David proceeds to sweep Eliza off her feet (and me!) Before the young lovers know it, the cruise is over and their time together at an end.
I absolutely LOVED David and Eliza's time spent on the boat, BUT what really drew me in and tugged at my heartstrings were the letters the couple wrote to one another while separated. You know a book is good when you can literally feel the pain and longing the characters are experiencing, floating up off the page. My heart ached for David as he struggled to cope with how much he missed Eliza. I teared up when Eliza finally received David's first letter.
There's no sex in this book. Let me repeat. No dirty language, no bumping uglies, no nookie. And you know what? It was wonderful. Lots of kissing, and caressing and pure romance, carries you through the story, which once you start, you won't want to put down.
I give Life, Liberty and Pursuit 4.5 stars for being all kinds of awesome!
