Slang...it's what's for dinner!

Happy Thursday, peeps!

Song of the day- Forget You by Cee Lo Green

I like slang.

There. I said it.

I'm an overgrown child who enjoys colorful language that often times doesn't make sense. And having a sixteen year old in the house? Yeah, that doesn't help matters any. Thing is, slang's not for everyone. It's an acquired taste for sure, and a subject where I believe there isn't a lot of middle ground. You either enjoy its use, or you loathe it.

Speaking for myself, I find it hilarious. I've got the Online Slang Dictionary bookmarked on my toolbar and visit it frequently. More often than not, I end up laughing over some ridiculous new word, and end up trolling through the site snickering like a child. Yes...I will repeat once again, I'm an overgrown child. I laugh at potty language and when someone gets smacked in the family jewels on TV or in a movie I can usually be found rolling on the floor with laughter. The TV show Wipeout? OMG...it gives me stitches in my side, I laugh so hard. Yeah, yeah...I've got problems, lol!

My current WIP is set in 1692 Salem Village. There wasn't a lot of slang usage back then. In fact, there wasn't any slang usage at all. As you can imagine, for someone like me who enjoys throwing out random curse words like "douchebag" and "asshat" this project has proven to be somewhat of a challenge. A GOOD challenge mind you. I think anytime writers can step out of their comfort zones and expand their horizons, it's a good thing.

I'm curious to know how you all feel about slang and its usage. Do you enjoy it? Do you cringe whenever you come across it? Feel free to share your thoughts!

Hope you have a wonderful day!

I like slang. I think it adds lots of voice and humor to what might otherwise be flat writing. I don't use it in my own writing very much, because it always just sounds funny and awkward when I do it. But I like when other people do.

I think slang depends on the character. Since this is Salem--I wouldn't see to much of it execept through the narrators voice.

Kaiti- You're a girl after my own heart!

Julie- No! Lol! No slang usage in Salem! And very true about it depending on the character. I can't really picture a sixty year old man spouting off "Dude! That Betty was smokin'!" Hahaha! Just wouldn't jibe :D
