Hope you are all doing well. The sun is shining here in Tracy, and I'm filling pretty chipper despite my annoying allergies. Woohoo!
Let's talk about genres today, or more specifically, different sub-genres in the realm of romance. It's no secret I read a ton of paranormal romance. It's my favorite, and I devour books about vampires, ghosts, warlocks etc. like candy. So, when I started writing, it was no big surprise to me that I wrote within the paranormal sub-genre. It's what I like; it's what I know. Make no mistake, I do read other types of books and enjoy them immensely. But, paranormal...yeah, it's been my mainstay for quite a while.
So, if I love paranormal so much, why then did I decided to pen a romantic suspense for my third novel? Why not stick with the genre I'm so comfortable with?
For me, the answer was simple: I needed a breath of fresh air, and writing in a new genre provided exactly that. Everyone needs a break from the things they love every now and then. I love PB&J, but I certainly don't want to eat it morning, noon and night! (Well, when I was pregnant I did, lol!) Sometimes, breaking from the norm and venturing out into something new is just what we need to spark our creative juices and keep things exciting.
I think the same goes with reading. We can really enjoy one type of book, but if we don't venture out and try something new every now and then, we run the risk of burning out. I know the phrase "Variety is the spice of life" is cliched, but it's very true. Well, at least for me, anyway!

I like a variety of books and I don't label myself to read one genre because like you. I hate mac and cheese but my kids will eat it. But I did eat it alot growing up :)
I think that it only shows a wide talent if authors are capable of writing good books in different genres. I'm not saying that authors who write only in one specific genre are not good or talented. Not at all. Different genres show auhtors from different perspectives for readers.
